Hand Surgery in San Antonio
The importance of proper hand/wrist function cannot be overstated. From something as simple as putting on clothing, daily hygiene, or using a telephone or computer; without proper function of one’s hand/wrist a person’s quality of life can be significantly impacted. The anatomy of the hand is quite complex and delicate. Within the hand there are multiple small bones, tendons, nerves, vessels as well as ligaments. All these structures can be impacted by various trauma, infections, cancers or routine daily use.
Whenever one of these structures does not work correctly, it could impact the function of the surrounding structures within the hand and thus a person’s quality of life. Treatment of hand conditions can vary from use of splints, hand therapy, medications, and/or surgery. To treat conditions of the hand/wrist all surgeons will have completed initial training in either general surgery, orthopedic surgery or plastic surgery. After that training most of the surgeons have spent an additional year in subspecialty training.
