Patient Information
A 37 year old female with multiple medical problems including poor circulation in her extremities, obesity, diabetes, kidney failure who had a dialysis fistula placed on her left leg which was not working. Unfortunately she went on to develop an infected wound around her thigh/knee/leg region. While amputation of her leg was an obvious low risk surgical option, if the patient had her leg amputated she would likely be bed bound. This would make her dependent on her family, increase the risks of pneumonia, pressure ulcers and further weight gain. After a series of surgical procedures to clean her wound and control the infection the skin and muscle from her calf was eventually used to close her wound and combat her infection. Three years after her surgery the patient still has her leg, is not bed bound and lives an independent life.
