Patient Information
Next to the face the hand plays a central role in how other people view us. Thus when treating hand injuries it is important to consider both functional outcome and cosmesis for the patient.
This is a 58 year old patient that worked on a chicken farm when he had his index finger partially amputated and the injury was initially treated by another doctor. The patient came in with an infected amputated index finger stump. In order to save the patient's hand, the infection was treated, and for both functional and cosmetic reasons the remnant of index finger was removed (in what is called a ray amputation) and the patient returned to work at the position he posessed before the injury. The patient commented that "many people can not tell that I am missing a finger". The patient is happy with his outcome.
